Mixing Clay

 Steps for Mixing Clay
  1. Select the two colors of clay that will make the color you want when mixed
    • Ex. red + blue = purple, white + red = pink
  2. Select a ratio of the two colors of clay
    • See below for more information
  3. Roll, mush, mash, and mix the two clays until they become one solid color

     Ratios

     How ratios work
    • 1:1 - equal amounts of both colors listed
    • 1:2 - amount of second color = 2 * the amount of the first color listed
    • 2:1 - amount of first color = 2 * the amount of the second color listed
    • 1:3 - amount of second color =  3 * the amount of the first color listed
    • Other ratios follow this pattern
What ratios are on Sculpey Corner
    • Elephant
      • 2:1 ratio of white to black clay to obtain gray clay
    • Dragon
      • 1:1 ratio of white to blue clay to obtain a light blue
How to select your own ratio

The amount of each color of clay to use will depend on whether you want to obtain a light, medium, or dark shade of that color.  Below are the basic guidelines to use to get the right shade you want.
    • light color - use more of the lighter of the two clays you are mixing
      • For a very light shade, start with the light color and gradually add dark clay
    • medium color - start with a 1:1 ratio of clay then adjust amounts as needed
    • dark color - use more of the darker of the two clays you are mixing
      • For a very dark shade, start with the dark color and gradually add light clay
These guidelines also apply if you are trying to a get a certain color.  For example when mixing red and blue you can obtain a bluish-purple, purple, or reddish purple.
